The word 'Pioneer' comes from the old French word 'Peonier' meaning a foot soldier. Anyone who has had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Shugart can imagine how many times he must have felt like a foot soldier as he attended countless numbers of watch shows and locations worldwide in the pursuit of information and photographs for the "Complete Price Guide to Watches". Mr. Shugart built this book literally step by step and page by page. He would pay for a table at NAWCC Marts, set up a portable photography system and then search the conventions for interesting watches and movements. For over 25 years you could guarantee that if there was a watch convention in town, Cooksey and his closest friend Tom Engle would be there - walking, talking, looking, learning and laughing. Cooksey would also be the first person at Ashland's front door when an important collection came in - ready to photograph anything of interest. He would spend hours looking through thousands of movements and hundreds of horological books in the Ashland library. He gave pocket and wrist watch collectors a solid base of information which before the introduction of the "Complete Price Guide to Watches" never existed. The first edition was in 1981 and it consisted of 250 pages. It has since grown as has the field of watch collectors. In the year 2005, the 25th. edition was published with nearly 1,200 pages of solid information. Cooksey Shugart was born in Cleveland, Tennessee in 1937 where he still resides with his wife of 30 years - Martha. Cooksey will be the first to tell you that Martha was instrumental in the development of the "Complete Price Guide to Watches." Her support for the project and assistance with editing, proofing and bookkeeping played a big part in the success of the book. Cooksey's introduction to antiques started early when he would attend auctions and visit antique shops. His mothers specialty was cut glass and his father taught him the finer points of wood restoration. Mr. Shugart also had a strong mechanical and electronic background from his 17 year employment history with National Cash Register. He bought an antique clock at auction which needed restoration to the wood case and soon his mechanical instincts took over and the mechanism was being explored. That clock experience lead to a life long fascination with timepieces. He has been a horologist for over 40 years and a member of the NAWCC since 1970. He has searched for fine timepieces and has met with expert watch makers and the foremost experts in the field of antique pocket and wrist watches as well as other leading authors and publishers all over the world. He has enjoyed broadening his knowledge in horology while traveling extensively throughout the United States and numerous other countries including the Far East and Europe. Some of his excursions include the Basel Fair merchandise market places world wide and trade fairs as well as leading watch and clock manufacture facilities, famous clock towers and museums. He has met renowned master watch and clock makers and has visited regional and national conventions as well as auctions and horological galleries. Mr. Shugart has met with expert repair and tradesmen as well as knowledgeable private collectors. He has attended numerous NAWCC shows and marts to keep up to date and to continually expand his horological reference library and library of watch photographs. Cooksey Shugart was a collector, not just of watches and material goods, but a collector of knowledge. Cooksey and his wife Martha gave the world a wealth of information through their hard work and diligence. Cooksey has derived strong satisfaction from his association with the NAWCC. He has helped this organization grow over the past 30 years by sponsoring fellow collectors to a new world of horological affiliation. He has introduced a total of over 4,500 people to the NAWCC membership. His achievements are many, a brief listing follows. Cooksey Shugart was NAWCC director from 1997 to 2001. He received the life time achievement award in 2005 from the NAWCC chapter 185. He received the diamond level sponsorship award from the NAWCC for recruitment. As a special note - no one at this time has recruited more NAWCC members than Cooksey Shugart. Articles regarding his publications and the information he has provided to the world in regard to collecting watches has appeared in Forbes Magazine October 1990, Uhren in April 1998, Kiplinger's Magazine October 2002, Watch Time Magazine December 2004 and InSync Magazine in July 2004. The sale of Mr. Shugart's collection is a once in a lifetime opportunity for all collectors. Ashland is proud to present this premier collection!
