Description
HEBDOMASSwitzerlandUNIQUE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF WATCHESVERY BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE WATCH CA 1910VERY BEAUTIFUL MECHANICAL WORK This auction is for a scarce and completely original example of a men’s timepiece that dates to approx 1910. This trademark was registered to Graizley & Cie, La Chaux de Fonds. He patented the Hebdomas 8 day watch in January 1889. The tradename is still in use today with both pocket watches and wristwatches available. It was used on 8 day watches with a visible balance wheel. At first these 8 day watches were all made by hand. Hebdomas watches won gold medals in Chacago 1892, Geneva 1896, Paris 1900, Milan 1906 and Brussels 1910. In 1915, the patent and tradename was transferred to Schild & Cie, the new name for the Graizely & Cie company. This timepiece features an Original and elegant gently white porcelain enamel dial with black enameled Arabic numerals. Also it’s decorated with silver and gold inlay is in near mint condition …it is pristine. It is featuring a 60 minute checkered outer track border with silver and gold points, original Louis XVI filigree hands. The gently white enamel dial has an exposed engraved bridge with balance and regulator with red ruby. The beautiful dial is marked "8 JOURS" (French for "8 DAYS") as well as HEBDOMAS. It’s all completely original and so a pretty fair example of this type of watch, which are quite hard to find nowadays. The matching vintage domed Onion-style winding crown is in tiptop shape, winding smoothly. This watch is called a “Transitional" era watch. It was re-cased for use as a wristwatch. This was quite common back then, as it became “fashionable” for men to wear wristwatches (and stop carrying pocket watches around) they would send a small pocket watch to the original factory or jeweler to be retrofitted. It is an important part of watch history and tells the story of the wristwatch as it grew in popularity. It is a signed & registered design model that features a three piece, hinged SILVER case is ORIGINAL and was made especially for HEBDOMAS. The open face case has a hinged back and a snap on front. The inside of the outer case lid is signed GALONNE – 0.800 EP and case reference number 1679. There is also German (Crescent Moon/Crown) hallmark. This beautiful wristwatch has the Original movement in an excellent status which was very well saved, considering age of this watch. The movement is completely covered by its gilt mainspring cover signed “Spiral Breguet Levees Visibles, 8 Jours, Ancre, Qualite Superieure Garantie”. The cover is also decorated with four medals and signed Chacago 1892, Geneva 1896, Paris 1900, Milan 1906 and Bruxelles (Brussels) 1910. It runs for 8 days but takes 8 times as long as a normal watch to wind up, so there is no saving in labour there. This is a “NAIL SET” watch so you don’t pull the crown out to set the time. Instead, you press the little button near the crown IN and then move the crown to set the hands, releasing the button once you’re finished. It’s easy, so don’t worry about getting the hang of it! It comes complete with a new 18mm black high quality pigskin strap genuine leather with matching chrome silver buckle for a most excellent look. Diameter (with crown): 56.50 mm (2.2244 inches)Diameter (without crown): 49.00 mm (1.9291 inches)Watch crystal diameter: 40.00 mm (1.5748 inches)Thickness: 17.00 mm (0.6693 inches) This cleaned, oiled and regulated antique watch winds and sets very smoothly while keeping very good, accurate time. Many repairs will not be cheap, as most likely they will require replacement of non-standard parts (unlike most late model watches). - Antique watches should not be beaten or dropped - because repairs may be expensive. - Antique watches are generally NOT waterproof. This is because waterproofing was not in general production until the middle of the 20th century for most watches. Therefore you should protect your antique watch from exposure to moisture. - If your watch becomes wet it should be dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drier to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reduce the amount of rust. - If your watch becomes wet with any kind of salt water you should immediately immerse or spray your watch with fresh (no-salt) water to remove all the salt from the works before drying the watch completely. Any salt left in the watch will combine with moisture in the air to rust metal components of the movement, case etc. - Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. If you can avoid it do not wind the watch hard. - When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement. - If you must adjust counter-clockwise make it for small adjustments only (i.e. for minutes, NOT hours). - Be careful and gentle when adjusting the movement speed (faster or slower). Don't make sharp movements, and don't touch other components in the movement especially the pendulum mechanism. - Every 2-3 years it is necessary to service and oil vintage watches. - IF the watch is dirty - allow the watch to run down, don't wind it again until you have it serviced by a qualified watch repair expert. Dust will absorb and remove important lubricants and cause the movement pieces to wear down. - To clean the case, dial and crystal you should use a cloth that does NOT leave fibers as these may get caught up in the movement. Check with your Watch repair expert to get an appropriate cloth. - Keep your antiques watch away from magnets. Strong magnetic fields may affect the accuracy of your watch since some vintage watches were made with iron based components in the movement. - Most Cases and Covers are fine components and will not handle abuse well. The watch should not be shaken, beaten, or stressed. - Antique watches generally experience an error of up to 5-7 minutes a day. Any accuracy of +- 5 minutes is very good. It will make a great addition to any collection. Payment must be received by seller within 7 days of the close of this auction. The eBay system compares your bid to those of the other bidders. 3. The system places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position (or to meet the reserve price). The system will bid up to your maximum amount. 4. If another bidder has a higher maximum, you'll be outbid. BUT, if no other bidder has a higher maximum, you win the item.
