Description
CARTIER ART DECO PLATINUM POCKET WATCH AND CHAIN c1920   BORING BITS FIRST BUT PLEASE READ ALL OF MY ITEMS ARE GENUINE THIS IS A RARE OPPORTUNITY. I AM SELLING ALL OF MY WATCHES !! EVERYTHING MUST GO. EVERYTHING IS ADVERTISED AT THE MINIMUM FIGURE I WILL ACCEPT BUT IF IT IS A FIXED PRICE LISTING AND OFFERS ARE ENABLED, I WILL TAKE THE BEST OFFER RECEIVED DURING THE LISTING PERIOD. WHY ?.... I have too many interests and some of them are suffering due to the lack of time I have to spend on them. I have therefore decided to cease my interest in watches altogether !! ( aside from maintaining the Touchon & Co specialist website as I am the leading authority in the brand and in the middle of writing a book about them ). All of my watches, gold watch chains and watch fobs are therefore being offered for sale over the coming weeks as, some in bulk lots and some single items because I now intend to concentrate my time and resources on breeding and working with gundogs ..... German Pointers to be precise. ... Something of a departure from watches but dogs demand time and effort and I have no time left for anything else. Everything I have collected over the years including my vintage movie poster collection (aside from a very few watches I am keeping for private use and sentimental reasons) will be disposed of over the coming weeks. I HAVE DECIDED TO MAKE MY LISTINGS PRIVATE FOR THE SECURITY OF MY BUYERS AND IF YOU ARE ON MY BLOCKED BIDDERS LIST, TOO BAD .... YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE ANNOYED ME IN THE PAST SO DON'T WASTE TIME ASKING FOR THE BLOCK TO BE REMOVED. NOTE :- I DO NOT NORMALLY ACCEPT PAYPAL FOR AMOUNTS IN EXCESS OF £ 2000 GBP , HOWEVER, EBAY'S LATEST WHEEZE IS TO FORCE SELLERS TO ACCEPT PAYPAL ON ALL LISTINGS REGARDLESS OF VALUE AND WHILST THEY PROHIBIT USERS ADDING PERCENTAGES TO COVER PAYPAL FEES, EBAY STATE THAT THEY ASSUME THESE FEES WILL BE 'BUILT IN TO THE PRICE' ... SO ASK YOURSELF ..... 'IS PAYPAL REALLY FREE FOR BUYERS TO USE ? ' AND WHY DO EBAY AND PAYPAL USE DIFFERENT EXCHANGE RATES ? ..... ANYWAY,  DUE TO THE VALUE OF THE ITEM, YOU MAY FIND THAT YOU CAN'T USE PAYPAL TO PAY, SO IF YOU BID ON THIS WATCH AND FIND THAT TO BE THE CASE, YOU WILL NEED TO BE ABLE TO PAY BY CHEQUE, BANK DRAFT, DIRECT PAYMENT OR WIRE TRANSFER TO MY UK BANK ACCOUNT IN GB POUNDS..... I DO NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS OTHER THAN THROUGH PAYPAL..... IF I AM UNHAPPY WITH ANY ASPECT OF A PAYPAL PAYMENT e.g. IF IT LOOKS FRAUDULENT OR SUSPICIOUS IN ANY WAY, I WILL REFUND IT AND CANCEL THE SALE. ARE YOU A ZERO RATED BIDDER ?....... If so, be prepared to answer E mails I send you. If you don't I will remove your bid. ********************************************************************************* DESCRIPTION..... KEPT BRIEF DUE TO THE NUMBER OF ITEMS I AM LISTING, BUT VERY DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS CAN BE PROVIDED ON REQUEST. GENUINE c 1920 CARTIER ART DECO SOLID PLATINUM ULTRA THIN POCKET WATCH and CHAIN. FAMOUS PREVIOUS OWNER WITH SIGNED FIRST EDITION BOOK        This item is a FABULOUS, RARE GENUINE and VERY SOUGHT AFTER ART DECO SOLID PLATINUM CARTIER POCKET WATCH and CHAIN dating from around 1920. It has an ULTRA THIN FABULOUS QUALITY European Watch and Clock Co Inc movement ( who were one of the select few supplying high grade movements to Cartier ). CARTIER PLATINUM ART DECO WATCHES ARE EXTREMELY RARE. The watch comes with a first edition book, signed by the previous owner, a famous Pulitzer Prize Winner and former Washington Bureau Chief of the New York Times... if you want to know more, read on and be sure to scroll all the way down for the pictures...................  SPARE MOVEMENT TOO !! I have now purchased a spare European watch and Clock Co movement which will be included with this watch for use as spares etc .... these movements are extremely rare and the spare cost me a fortune. The spare movement is largely complete, all the staffs are good and even the stem is present. It just lacks a couple of under dial parts. ******************************************************************************** DETAILED DESCRIPTION PREVIOUS OWNER                                  Arthur Krock, born 1897, began his career as a reporter on the Louisville Herald, before moving to the Louisville Times and the Courier Journal where he became editor before becoming the assistant to the President of the New York World. Subsequently he became Washington Correspondent and then Bureau Chief of the New York Times. During his career he won the Pulitzer Prize THREE TIMES and due to his position mixed with some very influential political figures....... I purchased this watch and chain after his death from a family member.  I don't know if he himself purchased the watch or if he was given it, but there is no doubt that this is a rare opportunity. THE MOVEMENT                                  is ULTRA THIN ( about 2mm, yes TWO millimeters thick !! ) and EXTREMELY HIGH GRADE, signed European Watch and Clock Co Inc 19 jewels 8 adjustments to temperatures and 6 positions !!!! The movement is original to the case. Some of the large ruby jewels are visible in the photographs. The gear wheels are gold.  The movement plates are nickel finished and in excellent condition.  Visible movement screws are brightly polished steel as is the swing pointer regulator.  The balance is of bimetallic compensation type with gold screws. The movement is in beautiful condition and perfect working order, with all elements of the watch acting as they should..... Although the watch keeps excellent time for the duration of it's function, timekeeping is not warrantied due to the age of the piece...and the fact that it has been at the bottom of my safe for years so could do with a service..  The watch is wound and set by the crown and ticks away quite happily without any encouragement. ( incidentally, the movement, dial and hands are so fine and slim that together they weigh only 16 grammes !!!!! that is a tiny amount for a movement 37 mm in diameter )......I have since purchased another EWC movement which will be included FREE in the sale for the purpose of spares etc and is extremely valuable in its own right.....they are VERY hard to come by. THE DIAL                                  Is silvered guilloche or engine turned matte silvered type, signed CARTIER in black and is extremely DECO in appearance with Arabic numerals in black and black batons for the minutes. The dial design is a sort of sunburst type with a scalloped centre and edge.  It is in EXCELLENT condition for this type of watch and design with some very minor rub marks and some tiny specks. This is the original dial and not a refinish.  The hands are stylised Deco Breguet Moon Type and in excellent condition, and finished in blued steel.Truly stylish Art Deco timepiece. ( the dial has been removed for examination and is scratch signed Cartier on the back. There is also another word I cannot decipher ). THE CRYSTAL                                  appears to be original and is bevelled edge in excellent condition with a few insignificant nicks and a small scratch in the centre.  THE CASE                                  is ULTRA THIN, SOLID PLATINUM ( at least 950 grade ). It bears only one mark anywhere as far as I can see..... inside one edge of the bow are the tiny numbers 976. Otherwise the case is unmarked apart from watchmakers marks inside the case back from various services over the years.....there is a very small circular mark where the watch was assayed previously inside the case back.  The case including the crystal is only 6.5mm thick and about 4.5 mm thick without the crystal ( I haven't removed the crystal, but took fairly precise measurements with a Vernier caliper. ). Despite this incredible wafer like construction, the case with the movement removed weighs a hefty 33.3 grammes and the fully assembled watch weighs 49.2 grammes. The case back on it's own weighs 14.8 grammes despite being only about 1mm thick due to the density of Platinum. The purity test was conducted by an appraiser some years ago for insurance purposes. The case is warrantied as SOLID PLATINUM ( 950 grade minimum ) or your money back !! The case is overall polished with a snap on back which snaps in place firmly. The back looks to have been polished at some time in the past and may have been previously engraved. There are a couple of really tiny pinpoint depressions in the case back and some roughness near the case back opening point, otherwise the only outward marks are the initials AK in the centre of the back. It is in overall beautiful condition. The bow and winding crown are in excellent condition with the classic Cartier triangular bow really complementing the watch. The watch is stem wound and set. Overall size excluding the crown is about 46.5 mm diameter and as mentioned above, extremely slim ( 4.5mm excluding the crystal ). THE CHAIN                                  came with the watch and is believed to be original to it. It is a fine dress type which feels really strange due to the mass of platinum. It looks light, but it feels very heavy.  The links are very unusual, a sort of angular belcher type. One end of the chain is marked as SOLID PLATINUM on an integral connecting link. All the chain links are warrantied to be SOLID PLATINUM ( 950 grade or higher ). The two spring end clips ( one teardrop and one round ) are both solid 14K white gold and marked as such ( This is usual, as platinum end clips were not readily available ). The springs are firm. Overall length including the end clips is 14 and 1/4 inches or 36cm. The links are about 4mm by 2mm and the whole thing weighs in at a hefty 13.8 grammes. THE SIGNED FIRST EDITION BOOK                                  The title is MYSELF WHEN YOUNG ( growing up in the 1890's ) by Arthur Krock. It is a first edition and was published in 1973 and contains a signed dedication from Arthur Krock dated Sept 5th 1973 to a Carl D Perkins who I understand was a U.S. political figure. This didn't come with the watch and chain when I bought it, but I thought it would be a nice addition. Arthur Krock wrote several books, but I thought the title was particularly charming given the things he achieved later in life. It is nice to see his picture on the rear cover. IN SUMMARY                                  A FABULOUS, RARE GENUINE and VERY SOUGHT AFTER ART DECO SOLID PLATINUM CARTIER POCKET WATCH and CHAIN dating from around 1920.  The watch comes with a first edition book, signed by the previous owner, a famous Pulitzer Prize Winner and former Washington Bureau Chief of the New York Times.... also included is a spare and very valuable EWC movement.   IF YOU ARE A ZERO RATER, I WILL REMOVE YOUR BID IF YOU DON'T CONTACT ME BEFORE BIDDING. BEST WISHES. GERMAN POINTERS FOREVER !!!   PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS IF YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT ANYTHING. REMEMBER ... I WILL PERMIT 14 DAYS FOR YOU TO ARRANGE FUNDS, BUT I DO WANT AT LEAST A 5% DEPOSIT VIA PAYPAL PRETTY QUICKLY AFTER THE AUCTION TO INDICATE YOUR SERIOUS INTENTIONS.   Note Regarding Paypal Payments.       Ebay now require sellers to accept Paypal for all listings, however, if you pay by Paypal and I am unhappy about the Paypal transaction in any way, I will reject your payment and cancel the transaction. I will continue to do this until ebay indemnify all sellers aginst all losses arising from abuse of the Paypal system by fraudulent buyers. On conclusion of the auction, payment may be made by Paypal (but see above note ), cheque, bankers draft, postal or money order, direct payment or wire transfer into my UK bank account, details of which will be given to the winning bidder on request. THE AUCTION IS TRANSACTED IN GB POUNDS AND THAT IS THE ONLY CURRENCY IN WHICH PAYMENT IS ACCEPTED. Unless there is prior agreement, payment MUST be received within 14 days of close of auction or the item will first be offered to the second place bidder before being relisted. Items paid for by cheque will not be shipped until payment has cleared or you have a 100% feedback rating in excess of 50, in which case goods will be shipped immediately at my discretion. My rates for insured shipping and cost of secure packaging assuming a packed weight not greater than 500g are.......                               £ 7.50 GB Pounds Next Day Special Delivery within the United Kingdom                             £ 10.50 GB Pounds rest of the World International Signed For.  Delivery 7 to 14 working days usually. I HAVE NEVER HAD A ROYAL MAIL INTERNATIONAL SIGNED FOR PACKET GO ASTRAY IN 6 YEARS OF SENDING THOUSANDS OF WATCHES ACROSS THE GLOBE ....... *****************************************      PREMIUM INTERNATIONAL or EXPRESS DELIVERIES                      PLEASE NOTE :- I no longer offer premium express mail services for international deliveries as standard but will provide quotes on request.                           This is due to the fact that prices have increased to an unacceptably high level and also, NO ONE in the Express business and I mean NO ONE offers insurance on watches shipped internationally if their value exceeds about £ 100 and in some cases, this figure is much less. It is also the case that if the value of a watch is declared on the customs slip to exceed this figure, then officially, the company can refuse to handle it.  So, if you want it fast, then you can have it, but it won't be fully insured by the courier.                            Some companies will actually sell insurance above this level, but if you check their small print, they will not pay out in respect of watches valued above this figure. I don't care if your local shipping office tells you they do, because I have checked all of them and they don't !!!. ( FEDEX, DHL, PARCELFORCE, UPS,  ETC ETC ) So I suggest that you ensure you have your own insurance cover in place if purchasing high value watches and you may also wish to enquire why some sellers charge enormous amounts for insurance which is not actually valid.                           I will not enter into pointless communication with people who tell me that their local shipper does offer insurance on valuable watches as clearly, they don't know what they are talking about......... so don't bother E mailing me on the subject as I will just delete it.  ***************************************** DON'T WORRY TOO MUCH THOUGH BECAUSE AS STATED ABOVE I HAVE NEVER HAD A ROYAL MAIL INTERNATIONAL SIGNED FOR PACKET GO ASTRAY IN 6 YEARS OF SENDING THOUSANDS OF WATCHES ACROSS THE GLOBE. NOTE ...... The delivery times above are from me getting the packed item to the shipping depot or Post Office ...... not from when you pay. I generally ship the day after cleared payment is received. I DO COMBINE MULTIPLE ITEMS TO REDUCE SHIPPING COSTS, BUT SOMETIMES HAVE TO SLIGHTLY INCREASE CHARGES DEPENDING ON WEIGHT.  THESE RATES ARE NOT NEGOTIABLE AND WILL BE ADDED TO THE WINNING BID FOR THE TOTAL AMOUNT DUE......... I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO INCREASE THE CHARGES DUE TO ANY UNUSUAL SHIPPING REQUESTS OR IF THE ITEM IS OF PARTICULARLY HIGH VALUE.......... ANY EXTRA CHARGES WILL ONLY BE THOSE CHARGED TO ME BY THE POST OFFICE.......... I DO NOT PROFITEER FROM SHIPPING RATES ! I accept returns within 14 days of receipt only if the item is found to differ SIGNIFICANTLY from the item listing and if it is returned EXACTLY AS SUPPLIED, IF AND ONLY IF THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF DISMANTLING WHATSOEVER. My items are however accurately described, so if you do not want it, do not bid for it. I do not refund postage charges and I do not pay customs fees or local taxes for which you are liable. I do not run an approval service. Thank you. Who am I and what are my credentials ? .....  I am a very enthusiastic collector of watches living in England.  I have over 30 years of experience and am particularly interested in highly stylised Art Deco watches.  I am also a trained engineer and so appreciate watches of complex and fine manufacture of whatever era.  Almost all of the watches I offer for sale were originally part of my collection or purchased for the sake of study. I occasionally sell items on behalf of close friends who are not quite up to speed with eBay or who are just too busy to sell for themselves.  I also have an avid interest in precious metals and gemstones and my studies in these fields are extensive and ongoing.  I provide extremely detailed and honest descriptions of the items I offer for sale.  I have hundreds of repeat customers across the Globe and aim to make your eBay experience as enjoyable as possible regardless of the size of transaction. Restoration Policy ...... my restoration policy is quite simple..... I don't !!!!.  To me a restored thing is a new thing and not to my liking.  Unless there is no other option ( i.e. the item is regarded as 'too far gone' ) , I do not ever restore items that I place for sale as I would rather the eventual decision whether to restore or not rests with the final owner.  Some people totally destroy hundreds of years of history just so they can offer a visually perfect item for sale.  To me, imperfections and patina are what antiques and vintage items are all about, so the items you buy from me may have had a light clean if necessary, but that is all.  Any defects listed are to be taken as guides and not considered as exhaustive. If you want to contact me, please use the 'E mail seller' link near the top right of the listing. I will generally get back to you within 24 hours unless the answer to your question is contained in the listing....in which case I may not !!. On 05-Aug-08 at 01:00:21 BST, seller added the following information: Sellers: Get your own map of past buyers. Fast. Simple.
